Lens Review

The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens is quite a popular lens, and I think most of that is due to the very minimal damage it does to your wallet. The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens has a pretty good everyday focal length range that will cover most situations. It is most definitely one of those everyday use lenses. However, the DSLR users with the 1.6x crop factor might not like the less than adequate wide angle capabilities of the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens, because of the crop factor the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens will actually appear to be about 49mm-168mm.

The subject distance scale comes standard on the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens, which I wish was present on every Canon lens. This allows you to gauge (to a degree) how close you are to the subject you are shooting.

The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens comes standard with the powerful ring type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) drive which enables you to have lightning fast focusing, with a silent motor so you donít scare away the wildlife. It also helps to be able to focus quickly and accurately when you donít think conditions will permit.

The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens is an EF mount which means that this lens will work on both Canon digital SLRs and Canon film SLRs.

The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens comes standard with both AF (autofocus) and MF (manual focus) modes. The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens also has Full-Time Manual Focusing which enables the photographer to focus manually even when the autofocus mode is turned on. You simply set the camera to ONE SHOT AF mode and then press the shutter button down halfway. While you have the shutter button down halfway you may turn the focus ring to focus manually. Having this function on the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens will help new users avoid stripping their focus rings while doing manual focusing in and autofocus mode.

The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens also includes the Macro Mechanism which allows for low magnification for close-up photography. The autofocus function is also available in the macro range on the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens. The minimum focusing distance on the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens is 0.5m / 1.6 ft.

The build quality of the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens is better than average, and surprisingly good for the price that you pay for the lens. The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens is contrasted of 15 elements in 12 groups. The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens measures in at 2.8"" x 3"" / 72mm x 75mm, and the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens weighs in at 13.2 oz. / 375g.

The filter size for the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens is 58mm, and the compatible lens hood for the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens is the Canon EW-63II lens hood.

I found little to no noticeable vignetting on the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens, which I also found very surprising for this particular price point. You will see a little show up when you are wide open at f/3.5, but this is fairly common.

How did this lens perform as far as image quality? Well, I think the lens performed better than expected, but it was not excellent. At 28mm it seemed pretty soft between f/3.5-f/5.6, and it seemed to perform the best stopped down to a f/8 and f/11. At 50mm I found that at f/8 the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens performed the best. It began to get noticeably soft at as you opened it up or stopped it down from f/8. At 105mm the lens seemed to be consistently soft throughout, and just slightly improved stopped down to an f/8. I think the lens performed surprisingly well considering the under $300.00 price point.

As far as chromatic aberrations are concerned I found them to be quite noticeable at 28mm all the way through, but not really too bad at other focal lengths on the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens. Where you do find chromatic aberrations to be a problem you can easily fix this problem using camera raw editing tools.

All-in-all I found this lens to be fairly consistent in just about all categories. The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM lens did not perform badly, but actually performed fairly well considering the amount of money you pay for it. I think that is not a bad choice for the amateur pros looking for an inexpensive lens in this standard focal range.
