Canon 24-105mm f4L IS USM Lens Review

I am always happy to review L-Series glass, there is just something about testing the highest quality Canon makes. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens is definitely one of the best mid-range foal length lenses that Canon offers.

The subject distance scale comes standard on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, which I wish was present on every Canon lens. This allows you to gauge (to a degree) how close you are to the subject you are shooting.

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens comes standard with the powerful ring type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) drive which enables you to have lightning fast focusing, with a silent motor so you don’t scare away the wildlife. It also helps to be able to focus quickly and accurately when you don’t think conditions will permit.

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens also includes what is commonly termed “IS” or “Image Stabilizer”, which is a fairly new technology (within the last few years) Canon developed. Canon’s Image Stabilizer allows a photographer to take “hand-held” shots in almost any environment, well at least where you never thought you could take them before. The Canon Image Stabilizer on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens will allow you to shoot wildlife at the 105mm focal length on a cloudy day at 100 ISO and produce a great in-focus image. You may also have the ability to take a shot late in the evening at a shutter speed of 1/8 sec (depending on available natural light of course) to produce a clear image. Canon advertises the Canon Image Stabilizer having the ability to take a handheld shot at 3 stops less than you standard “non-IS” lens would be able to do. This particular image stabilizer mode on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens will possibly malfunction on a tripod and so it is not recommended for such use, because it is designed to reduced camera shake. The Canon image stabilizer (IS) technology is designed to eliminate or significantly reduce camera shake which is caused by the photographer on hand-held shots typically slower than a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second. The Canon image stabilizer (IS) technology is generally ideal for still life (stationary subjects) photography, subjects at dusk or indoors (dimly lit), museums and other places where flash photography is not permitted and any other situation where subjects cannot be captured with a faster shutter speed. The Canon image stabilizer (IS) function will not freeze motion. It is designed to reduce camera shake, not subject movement. The Canon image stabilizer (IS) technology is amazing though and that is why it has become so desired among photographers. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens comes with this technology which is a huge bonus to the overall value of Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens is an EF mount which means that this lens will work on both Canon digital SLRs and Canon film SLRs.

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens comes standard with both AF (autofocus) and MF (manual focus) modes. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens also has Full-Time Manual Focusing which enables the photographer to focus manually even when the autofocus mode is turned on. You simply set the camera to ONE SHOT AF mode and then press the shutter button down halfway. While you have the shutter button down halfway you may turn the focus ring to focus manually. Having this function on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens will help new users avoid stripping their focus rings while doing manual focusing in and autofocus mode.

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens also includes the Macro Mechanism which allows for low magnification for close-up photography. The autofocus function is also available in the macro range on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens. The minimum focusing distance on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens is 1.48 ft./0.45m.

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens has excellent build quality which is consistent throughout Canon’s L-Series line. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens is made of 18 elements in 13 groups. The measurements of the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens are 3.3 in. x 4.2 in / 83.5mm x 107mm and the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens weighs in at 23.6 oz / 670g.

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens comes with the lens hood, which is the Canon EW-83H. The filter size for this lens is a 77mm ring.

If you are planning on shooting weddings or doing photo journalism the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens is a must. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens is an amazing portrait lens as well. The 1.6x crop on many DSLR bodies makes the focal range on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens more like 38mm-168mm, which limits the wide angle capabilities of this lens.

There is a bit of noticeable vignetting on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens when it is wide open at f/4, and this is consistent at most of the focal lengths.

As far as the image quality of the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, well let’s just say that it is most definitely an L-Series lens. It produced great results. At 24mm the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens was extremely sharp, but seemed to soften up a bit at f/11. At 40mm the lens was also consistently sharp at all f/stops, but started to soften up a bit at f/11. At 70mm the lens was a bit soft at f/4 and at f11, but as soft as it was it was still extremely sharp and really performed well. At 105mm is where you begin to see the lens really start to lose its perfection. At 105mm the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens was soft at f/4-f/8 and ended up being the sharpest at f/11. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens performed excellent overall and definitely lived up to the L-Series quality we have come to expect.

As far as chromatic aberrations are concerned, I noticed quite a bit at 24mm wide open and at 40mm wide open, but that is to be expected at those focal lengths. I still found myself just a little disappointed at the appearance of this. This problem is easily remedied using the camera raw editing tools.

All-in-all I found this lens to be an excellent lens. I think as far as overall image quality is concerned the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens performed slightly better than it’s rival the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM, only because the contrast and color reproduction seemed a bit better. The sharpness of the lenses is pretty much sixes, but the 24-70mm f/2.8L has an advantage of being able to let in twice as much light. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens has an advantage of 35mm of extra focal length, and has the IS function, but I don’t think you can go wrong with either lens.
